Mechanics Insurance

Motor Trade insurance policies designed for mechanics including Road Risk cover and Combined cover.

What Is Mechanic Insurance And What Does It Cover?

Mechanic insurance is key for anyone working within this sector, regardless of whether you are full or part time and either working from home or from a specific business premises. It can provide cover for your tools, machinery, buildings and contents, and cover you to drive customer vehicles for testing and diagnosis.

There are 3 main levels of cover available for motor related insurance policies, including Mechanics insurance – they are:

Third Party Only – If you are involved in an accident that was your fault, then this level of cover will only offer protection for the Third Party and their vehicle. This means that if you are at fault for damages, it is only the other person who is covered by the claim, meaning you will have to cover the costs for any damages caused to your own vehicle or property.

Third Party, Fire and Theft – This is similar to Third Party Only (above), but with the added benefit of providing cover in the event of fire damage to or theft of your own vehicle.

Comprehensive – This is the highest level of cover available. This policy does everything offered by the previous cover levels, but also protects the policyholder from any accidental damage done to their own vehicle or property.

Mechanic insurance Explained

A Motor Trade insurance policy covering mechanics can come in various levels; they are Motor Trade Road Risk, and Motor Trade Combined. A Road Risk policy would better suit people working from home, covering you to drive customer vehicles. There are three types of cover; Third Party Only, Third Party, Fire & Theft and Comprehensive.  If you have Third Party Only and have an accident while testing or diagnosing a customer’s car, your insurer will only pay out to cover the third party costs. Similarly, Third Party Fire & Theft will only cover third party claims for any damage, plus fire or theft of vehicles whilst in your care.  Comprehensive cover however is an extensive policy that also provides cover for your own damages too.

If you have any employees then it is legal requirement that you have Employers’ Liability to cover you against any injuries, illness or death caused by negligence. You can also take out Public Liability insurance to protect any members of the public that are injured on your premises, or Product Liability  which will cover you if faulty or defective products which you fit, subsequently cause an accident and the customer chooses to sue, allowing you to then sue the product supplier.

Anyone operating from a business premises is recommended to take out a Motor Trade Combined policy.  This can cover all of the above plus extras including the premises itself, tools, plant and machinery, business interruption, money kept on site and general stock.
