What’s Going on in the Motor World This May?
A Look At Key Motoring Events In May
We’ve picked out some of the best events motoring events happening in the merry month of May!
Donington Historic Festival
A staple feature in the international historic racing calendar, the Donington Historic Festival returns on the 30th of April running through to the 1st of May. A host of races will feature across the weekend, including the Stirling Moss Trophy for pre-61 sports cars, the ‘Mad Jack’ for pre-War sports cars, and the HSCC Historic Formula 2 International Series. Festival goers can also wander around the paddocks, meet the drivers whilst getting up close and personal with the cars. Festival founder Duncan Wiltshire said: “There is something very special about Donington Park. The only pre-War race circuit that is still in use, it brings an unrivalled sense of history to the meeting, which is highly appropriate for an historic event. In 2016 the circuit will be celebrating the 80th Anniversary of Dick Seaman/Hans Ruesch’s win at the Donington ‘British Grand Prix’. So it is wonderful that Donington Park remains a fabulous circuit to race on, regardless of the age of car, which is why the Donington Historic Festival attracts world-class cars and drivers from across the globe.”
Stratford Festival of Motoring
The birthplace of William Shakespeare will be filled with cars this May, as the Stratford Festival of Motoring returns on Sunday 1st stretching until Sunday. The streets of Stratford-upon-Avon will be filled with a variety of cars, which will take part in a brand new cavalcade route, especially designed to prevent older cars from overheating.
London Motor Show
The London Motor Show returns with a three day event at Battersea Evolution. The annual event will have cars from Tesla, TVR, Lamborghini, Bentley, Ferrari and many more on show to the public. Running from Friday the 6th of May to Sunday 8th, the London Motor Show will see Sir Stirling Moss, Tiff Needel, Nigel Mansell, and Ben Collins give talks.
Top Gear
The famous BBC show returns with a whole new line-up on the 8th of May. Chris Evans and the Stig will be joined by Friends star Matt Le Blanc, racing driver Sabine Schmitz, journalist Rory Reid, F1 pundit Eddie Jordan, and YouTuber Chris Harris. Revealed earlier this year, the new line-up has some interesting choices, notably Le Blanc. Others like Schmitz, who has appeared on the show before, famously racing a Ford Transit around the Nurburgring, are less so. The format is set to change too, with double the amount of presenters the show made famous by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, could become unrecognisable. Although some may say that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
UK Slot Car Festival
Hark back to the innocent days of playing with Scalextric with the Slot Car Festival 2016. From free tracks to race to drags strips and bangers, there’s loads to do at this year’s Slot Car Fest. It runs over Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th of May at the British Motor Museum.
