Insurance For Young Drivers With Points

Many young drivers are eager to get on the road once they’ve passed their Practical driving test, but sometimes, naivety, inexperience or just plain bad driving can end up quickly earning points on their licence for many of them.

Get 6 Points & Lose Your Licence

For any young driver, getting points on their licence can be a stressful experience, and if you get six points within the first two years of holding your licence, you will lose your licence. You will then have to re-apply for a Provisional Licence and pass both a Theory test and a Practical test again before being allowed back on the road. Six points isn’t hard to acquire either, and under new laws, anyone caught using a handheld device at the wheel (such as a mobile phone) will automatically incur six points and a fine.

As a young driver, you will know that insurance is costly, and with points on your licence it’s only going to increase. In fact, you may find it difficult to even get Young Driver insurance because of it! This is due to many insurance companies already seeing young drivers as a higher risk compared to more experienced drivers. This is because statistically they are, and according to the charity Brake, young drivers that crash are twice as likely to be impaired by alcohol as older drivers. Speed is often found to be a contributing factor in crashes involving young drivers too, so when a young driver proves they are a risk by getting points endorsed on their licence, their insurance premiums will rise.

How Long Do Points Stay On Your Licence?

If you are a young driver that has received points on your licence or received a motoring conviction, then you need to be aware of the law when it comes to insuring your vehicle. In most cases, endorsements will stay on your licence for 4 years from the date of the offence, however if the endorsement is for reckless/dangerous driving (DD40, DD60 and DD80) or the motoring offence resulted in disqualification, then the points will be on the licence from the date of the conviction.

For more serious motoring offences such as drink driving, drug driving, causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs, or causing death by careless driving then failing to provide a specimen for analysis, the endorsements will stay on the licence for 11 years after the conviction. Many insurers will also require you to disclose your convictions for at least 3 years after the conviction date for most offences, and some even longer.
