Could I Change My Car Or Cancel My Policy?
You can cancel or change your Young Driver insurance policy but fees will apply.
Over the course of your Young Driver insurance policy, acquired through Think Insurance, your circumstances may change. You may have to either change your vehicle or cancel your Black Box insurance policy altogether, and this can be done at any point during your time on cover.
Changing Your Car On A Young Driver Black Box Insurance Policy
If you are calling up to change the car on your Black Box insurance policy, you will be charged an administration fee(s) and you will also have to pay to have a new telematics device installed in the vehicle, as the black boxes cannot be changed over to a different vehicle. The cost of this new box is detailed in your policy documents.
When you change car or cancel the policy, the Telematics device installed in your vehicle as part of your Young Driver insurance policy, will remain in the vehicle. However, if you are keeping the car and would like the black box to be removed, and not just deactivated, this can be done but will incur a fee. This is to pay for the administration costs, and the time of the engineer removing the black box. As mentioned in the FAQ ‘When Will The Box Be Installed?’ the engineer can visit you at both your home or at your place of work, between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
We do not recommend removing the black box yourself, and we are not liable for any damage to your vehicle if you choose to do this. If you were to remove the black box we would ask you not to send the device to us, as we will not compensate you for the device.
When changing the car on your Young Driver insurance policy we will have to install a new black box onto the vehicle that you are adding to your Telematics insurance policy. In the event you are changing your car due to being involved in accident, you would still need to pay for a new black box in your new car. You may be able to claim the cost back from the third party if you were not at fault for the accident.
If you opted to pay your Young Driver insurance premium in monthly instalments, and if the addition of your new vehicle causes your insurance premium to rise, then the amount you pay in your monthly instalments will also rise. However, if your Telematics insurance premium has gone down following a vehicle change, your monthly instalments will also be reduced.
When changing cars, if the price has changed (which in most cases it will) then you will be offered the chance to pay the additional premium in full. However, if you have already paid your Young Driver insurance premium in full at the start of the policy, and there is a rise in price substantial enough that you would want to change to a monthly instalment plan, then unfortunately this would not be possible.
Cancelling A Young Driver Black Box Insurance Policy
In the event you are cancelling your Black Box insurance policy because you have used all of your agreed mileage and you do not wish to purchase any more, you will be required to pay the remainder of your outstanding premium if you opted to pay by monthly instalments. This also means in the event you used up your mileage, do not want to pay for more but paid the Telematics insurance premium in full, then you would not be eligible for a refund.
However, if you were to keep your insurance policy in place but didn’t drive the car, and therefore not use any more miles, your vehicle would still be covered for theft or fire damage, as long as your car remains parked at your registered home address.
