How will you measure speed, smoothness and usage?
There are two main components inside the black box that we use to monitor your statistics: A GPS tracker and an accelerometer.
When you take out one of our Young Driver insurance policies, a telematics device will be installed in your car. The black box, which is fitted discreetly in your car, is able to track how you drive, what speed you should be travelling at and where you are driving, using two pieces of technology.
The GPS Tracker will help us monitor your speed and can also be used to determine where you are driving, on which roads, and if you are abiding by the speed limit. However, the GPS Tracker isn’t just useful for monitoring your speed and journeys, it can also be used if you are unfortunate enough to have your car stolen. We can pass the data gathered from the GPS Tracker to the police, to give them the last known location of the car, so that they can use that information to try to recover your car. You can find out more about this process in the FAQ: My car has been stolen, what do I do?
A piece of technology known as an accelerometer measures G force. You will generate G force when accelerating, braking and cornering. Excessive G force will mean that you could be accelerating too hard, braking too late or cornering at a higher speed than recommended.
If someone else is driving your vehicle we advise that you let them know that you have a black box installed as part of your Young Driver insurance policy, and inform them how it works so they know exactly how they should be driving your car to ensure they do not have a negative effect on your driving score.
Why Do You Measure Speed, Smoothness and Usage?
We measure the speed you do, the smoothness and your usage to help us determine your driving score. It’s your driving score, sometimes called a performance score, which helps us understand how well you are driving. This score also helps us decide your Black Box insurance premium once it’s time for you to renew your policy.
The information we gather can be viewed by you on your Dashboard via our Young Driver portal, which can be accessed 24 hours after the black box has been installed in your car. More information on how to access your Young Driver portal can be found by reading the FAQ: When will I be able to start seeing my driving feedback? Viewing your portal is not only a requirement of some of our Telematics insurance policies but it can be a vital resource if you want to improve your driving skills.
Learning how you can improve your driving skills isn’t just a way to reduce your Young Driver insurance premium, it may help you improve your fuel efficiency on journeys as well as making you a safer motorist, helping you avoid any driving convictions and preventing any accidents or claims.
