What Is Personal Insurance And What Does It Cover?
Personal insurance is the collective name for the different types of insurance products available to cover the personal items you may own, such as your car (car insurance) or your home and personal possessions (home insurance), or the activities you carry out, such as your holiday (travel insurance). It can also cover the different variations within these categories, such as young driver insurance and convicted driver insurance, or non-standard home insurance. Some of these products are required by law and some are optional.
Personal Insurance Products Explained
A Car Insurance Policy will protect you if you are involved in an accident, and the level of cover you have in place will determine the extent of that protection – whether it is Third Party Only, covering you against claims made by third parties for damage to their property and/or personal injury, Third Party, Fire & Theft, covering all third party claims detailed above plus any fire damage or theft of your own vehicle, or Comprehensive, which also covers any damages to your own vehicle.
With policy extras such as breakdown cover, legal expenses and protected no claims bonus, there’s lots of options to create the perfect policy for you. A Home insurance policy can protect your home, it’s buildings and contents, and also your personal possessions and valuables too. Policies can be taken out on a buildings only, contents only or buildings & contents basis, depending upon exactly what you’re after. You can include accidental damage to cover, as the name suggests, any accidents and again you can add optional extras such as legal expenses to your cover.
For Travel insurance, there are essentially 2 main policy types; Single Trip, covering an individual holiday, or an Annual policy, covering a number of trips across a 365 day period. There may be limitations to the number of trips, the length and destination of your travels covered, but all of these details should be checked with your provider before taking out cover. For more information on all of these specific products, check out their individual product pages for all the details.
